The earthquake measured 7.4 during the mid-morning rush hour and lasted several minutes. A number of cities were hit in a broad crescent of destruction from the capital Bogota, to the centre of coffee production in Pereira and the city of Cali, a bustling urban sprawl of three million people.
Colombia’s government has declared a national emergency and at least 82 people have been killed, while officials said people were still trapped under the rubble of collapsed buildings.
