At least 30 people have been killed after a mountainous heap of refuse collapsed at the largest landfill in Guinea’s capital, Conakry, on August 23rd. According to authorities, heavy rain washed over the mount of rubbish, triggering a landslide. Locals living near the open-air waste dump site had been given eviction notices as it was due to be closed down, however many people were still around at the time of the disaster.
