Ecuador drug gangs inquiry will have 'more strength' after shooting of prosecutor

The public prosecutor leading the investigation into the on-air assault on an Ecuadorian television station has been shot and killed in a daylight attack in the city of Guayaquil.

César Suárez, who focused on cases of organised transnational crime in the Guayas province, was ambushed in the north of the city. ‘The criminals, the terrorists, will not hold back our commitment to Ecuadorian society,’ the attorney general, Diana Salazar Méndez, said in a video on social media. ‘We call on the forces of order to guarantee the security of those who are carrying out their duties.’ There has been a surge of violence in Ecuador since the president announced a crackdown on drug gangs. In recent years, it has become a transit country for cocaine from neighbouring Columbia and Peru.
