All living hostages held in Gaza and hundreds of Palestinian prisoners held by Israel have been released as global leaders hail the end of the war that decimated the region and left tens of thousands dead.
The 20 remaining hostages were reunited with their families on Monday, while Hamas has promised to release the bodies 28 deceased Israeli captives soon.
Tens of thousands of Palestinians have been killed in the war. The Israeli military has said it will continue to operate defensively from the roughly 50% of Gaza it still controls after pulling back to agreed-upon lines.
In a televised statement on Friday Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the next stages would see Hamas disarm and Gaza demilitarised, but warned “if this is achieved the easy way, so be it, if not, it will be achieved the hard way”.
