The first beavers have been legally released in the wild in England today, at a huge nature reserve in Dorset. It’s being hailed as a watershed moment for the species. Beavers were hunted to extinction in Britain four hundred years ago.

In recent years they’ve been making a comeback, particularly in Scotland, as they’re introduced to fenced wetland and river sites. The animals engineer the landscape with dams and channels that help counter flooding and drought, but they’re not popular with everyone.
