England’s and India’s cricket players, and fans, donned white headbands at The Oval stadium today to remember batter Graham Thorpe and raise money for mental health.
Thorpe, who was regarded as one of England’s best batters of his generation, ended his life almost a year ago at a train station in Surrey.
An inquest last week heard he’d spiralled into depression after losing his job as a batting coach and that there were failings in his care.
His family are now campaigning with charity Mind to reduce the stigma felt by people who suffer from poor mental health.
And they chose today – on what would have been Graham’s 56th birthday – to get as many people as possible to wear his trademark white headband and encourage people to seek help – and not suffer in silence.
