Sir Keir Starmer has apologised to the victims of Jeffrey Epstein "for having believed Mandelson’s lies" and for appointing him British ambassador to the US.
Starmer faces growing pressure from Labour MPs, who are angry at his decision to appoint Lord Peter Mandelson to the role despite knowing about his links to the convicted sex offender.
Speaking at an event in East Sussex on Thursday, the prime minister insisted that “none of us knew the depth of the darkness” of Mandelson’s relationship with the convicted sex offender.
Addressing the scandal at the start of a speech, Starmer said: "The victims of Epstein have lived with trauma that most of us can barely comprehend, and they’ve had to relive it again and again."
