Spain, France and Italy have issued warnings about the impact of the extreme weather on health and wildfires have already broken out in Greece.
This latest heatwave follows a series of extreme-heat records being broken, including Europe’s hottest March ever, according to the EU’s Copernicus climate monitor. Europe’s increasingly common blistering heatwaves are a direct result of global warming, say scientists.
