ITV News has learned more than 390 mental health patients in England committed, or were suspected of, murder or manslaughter between 2018-2023.
The Health Secretary, Wes Streeting, has described the findings as “horrifying”, telling ITV News he will watch the problem like a “hawk”.
The research, carried out by the charity Hundred Families and shared exclusively with ITV News, reveals that each year an average of 65 mentally ill people carried out killings.
In some cases, the perpetrator killed more than one person, so the number of victims will be even higher.
The findings come after an independent report exposed a series of NHS failures in the treatment of Valdo Calocane, a man with schizophrenia who killed three people in Nottingham in 2023.
