ITV News has been given unprecedented access to a women’s prison that includes a mother and baby unit.
This is the first time journalists have ever been allowed onto a Mother and Baby Unit, where female prisoners live with their babies.
The government is preparing to radically overhaul the women’s justice system – and will focus on ending shorter sentences in favour of community based sentences/orders.
New legislation will be introduced imminently that will introduce a presumption against short prison sentences of 12 months or less. Instead, the Government will focus on community sentences, such as using Women’s Centres, tagging, and rehabilitation services to address the causes of crime.
