The Green Party has been accused of wanting to weaken Britain’s counter-terrorism laws, after a leaked briefing paper revealed proposals to align the rights of terror suspects with those of ordinary criminal suspects. Zack Polanski’s party wants those accused of plotting or aiding terror attacks to have what it calls ‘normal rights,’ meaning the current power to detain suspects for up to fourteen days without charge could be scrapped. Shadow Justice Secretary Nick Timothy condemned the plans, warning they would make it harder for police and security services to act when lives are at stake. The policy is believed to be linked to the Green Party’s opposition to the proscription of Palestine Action. Critics say the proposals could not come at a worse time, with tensions in the Middle East running high and the Greens having already passed a motion to proscribe the Israel Defence Forces as a terror organisation.
