US prosecutors have opened a criminal investigation into the Federal Reserve chief, Jerome Powell, examining whether he lied to Congress about the scope of renovations at the Bank’s Washington DC headquarters.
Mr Powell, who’s been under growing pressure from Donald Trump to slash interest rates, released an unprecedented video, insisting monetary policy would be based on "evidence and economic conditions" – and not "political pressure or intimidation."
