Fidel Castro to Greta Thunberg: The history of the UN General Assembly | ITV News

World leaders are convening in New York this week for the 80th United Nations General Assembly.

Donald Trump’s explosive speech on Tuesday, during which he called climate change a ‘hoax’ and made false claims about London turning to Sharia law, was just the latest in a long series of remarkable moments throughout UNGA’s history.

They include Cuban leader Fidel Castro’s 269-minute speech – which remains the longest in the history of the Assembly.

In 2009, Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi took to the stage in New York. His speech was meant to last 15 minutes but went on for close to 100, and featured an extraordinary tirade against other world leaders.

And, for very different reasons, Greta Thunberg was also scathing of world leaders when she spoke at the Assembly in 2019.

Mahatir Pasha explains the history of the Assembly, some of its most shocking moments, and whether it’s brought about meaningful change.
