Fires burn across the country as the UK faces it's hottest summer on record

Firefighters are continuing to tackle a wildfire in Blaenau Gwent, with a helicopter deployed to help efforts to contain the blaze.

The wildfire around Llangynidr Reservoir, in Ebbw Vale, has been declared a major incident due to the number of resources needed to tackle it, including a specialist helicopter.

It comes as the summer of 2026 is on course to be the UK’s warmest on record, the Met Office has said.

Provisional Met Office statistics show the mean temperature for summer so far, from June 1, is 16.48C – 1.88C above the 1991 to 2020 average.

To match the 16.12C recorded in 2025 – currently the UK’s warmest summer on record – the rest of August would only need to be 0.21C below the long-term average.
