Flames engulf woodlands as Canada declares state of emergency

Wildfires swept through Canada’s Northwest Territories forcing people to evacuate their homes, almost totally destroying one remote community and posing a risk to territorial capital Yellowknife.

Emergency vehicles were dispatched to contain the blazes and a state of emergency declared on Tuesday.

Wildfires have engulfed parts of nearly all 13 Canadian provinces and territories this year, forcing home evacuations, disrupting energy production, and drawing in federal as well as international firefighting resources.
