
The foreign secretary has made a statement in the House of Commons ahead of Hurricane Melissa making landfall in Jamaica, which the World Meteorological Organisation has warned is expected to bring about a "catastrophic situation" on the island nation.
Yvette Cooper told MPs that she spoke with her Jamaican counterpart yesterday to offer "full support and solidarity", and confirm that the UK is "prepared to mobilise resources at their request".
The Foreign Office’s crisis centre is operating 24 hours a day to assist British nationals, with rapid deployment teams moving into position, and the Ministry of Defence is also supporting their efforts.
"Any British nationals who are there should follow our travel advice and the advice of the Jamaican authorities," the foreign secretary said.
