At the age of 17, Eric Sampson was sent to Medomsley Detention Centre for committing a minor offence, where he says he experienced physical and sexual violence.
He said the youth centre was ‘hell on earth’ and that he could have died in there.
An investigation has found that decades of abuse of thousands of young men "was ignored and dismissed" by the prison service, the police and the Home Office.
