The state funeral of former US president Jimmy Carter begins and will last for six days.

The Carter Center announced its founder, who was the oldest living former US president, died peacefully at his home in Plains, the town where he was born in Georgia, on Sunday 29 December. He was 100 years old.

The proceedings will begin at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus and a motorcade will travel through downtown Plains towards his childhood home in Archery.

Carter will lie in repose in Atlanta for the public to pay respects from Saturday evening until early on Monday morning.

Carter’s remains will travel next to Washington, where he will lie in state in the Capitol Rotunda until his funeral on Thursday 9 January at the Washington National Cathedral.
