A gunman armed with an assault-style rifle has shot four people dead in a New York office block before turning the gun on himself.

Police said the man, named as 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura, opened fire in the lobby of the building in Midtown Manhattan – where four people died, then took the lift to the fourth floor and began shooting again. A police officer was among those killed.
