The French socialist party has held onto power in mayoral elections in the country’s four biggest cities, holding off a challenge from the far right.

The centre left, and its allies, won comfortably in Paris, Marseille, Lyon and Lille.
The far right did manage to win some former socialist strongholds in small towns, but they failed to take over any major cities.
