A court had found him guilty of a criminal conspiracy over plans to secretly finance his 2007 election campaign with cash from the late Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi, in return for restoring his international image.
Sarkozy, 70, becomes the first French ex-president to go to jail, as he begins his five-year sentence. The former leader says he will be appealing his conviction from jail.
