The mayors of Paris, Lyon and Marseilles said "entire sections" of their cities had been left unprotected during the riots – and called for an investigation into the police response.
The French Chamber of Commerce said more than 2,000 businesses had been affected – with damage running into hundreds of millions of pounds.
