17-year-old Nahel Merzouk was shot point blank for driving off during a traffic stop.
Footage of the incident went viral which sparked riots across the country.
The Versailles appeals court ruled that it had not been established that the officer intended to take the driver’s life so now he’ll be tried on the lesser charge without a jury.
He faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in comparison to up to 30 for murder.
