Ehud Barak has told Sky News that Hamas will move to fill the void in controlling Gaza unless an inter-Arab security force is set up "in weeks".
The former Israeli prime minister told Mark Austin the West could not drag their feet in securing the territory.
He said Hamas gunmen would not attack a security force that contained personnel from countries such as Qatar or Egypt – but the process had to take "weeks", not "months".
