Georgia: thousands protest over 'foreign agent' bill ahead of third reading

Thousands of Georgians protested outside the parliament building in Tbilisi on 12 May in the latest demonstration against a ‘foreign agents’ bill that would require organisations receiving more than 20% of their funding from outside the country to register as ‘agents of foreign influence’.

Critics fear the bill, which is due to have its third reading on Monday and final vote on Tuesday, will stifle the media and NGOs. The US has said parliamentarians must choose between Kremlin-style laws or the Euro-Atlantic democratic path they had embarked upon
