The German chancellor, Friedrich Merz, gave Donald Trump a German national team football shirt as the leaders of the G7 gathered on Tuesday to discuss Russia’s war in Ukraine.

The shirt was printed with Trump’s name and the number 47 on the back, a reference to him being the 47th US president. Trump’s grandfather, Friedrich, was born in Kallstadt, Germany in 1869. The German national team kicked off their World Cup campaign in Houston, US, with a 7-1 win against Curaçao
