German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is in Turkey on his first official visit since taking office. One of his first stops was to the Atatürk mausoleum in the capital Ankara, where the chancellor laid a wreath in honour of modern Turkey’s founder, Kemal Atatürk. Later Merz is due to meet with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for talks expected to focus on the war in Ukraine, migration, and peace efforts in the Middle East.
