German election: Conservatives projected to win with far-right AfD in second

Voting has now finished with exit polls predicting that Centre right Christian Democrat Friedrich Merz will become the new German Chancellor – and orchestrator of a coalition Government –
after his party picked up 29 per cent of the votes.

But – in second place – with a 19.5 per cent share – the far right AfD – the Alternative fur Deutschland – looks set to be a significant force in the new make up of the Bundestag. And with just 16 per cent, the centre left SPD led by the current Chancellor Olaf Scholz, has been swept from power.
