Germany elections: Merz calls for ‘independence’ from US after election win

The man set to be Germany’s next Chancellor says his priority will be to strengthen Europe so it can achieve "real independence from the US".

Friedrich Merz, whose conservative bloc won the election, must form a coalition government – most likely with the centre-left Social Democrats, who got their worst ever result.

He’s ruled out working with the far-right Alternative for Germany, which surged into second place.
