Germany’s conservative leader Friedrich Merz has suffered an embarrassing setback by failing to secure the required majority in the Bundestag to become Chancellor.

His Christian Democrats were the largest party after February’s election and it was thought that a coalition with the centre-left Social Democrats would enable him to lead Germany.
His failure is unprecedented in modern times and the German parliament has 14 days to choose a chancellor.
The second largest party, the far-right Alternative for Deutschland, called for fresh elections.
