Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz just said the world is witnessing “the provisional end of a rules-based multilateral order” – a sober assessment he had so far reserved for off the record. So, is Germany giving up on upholding its role as champion of international law? He is simply telling it as it is, Thorsten Benner, the director of the Global Public Policy Institute tells DW’s Michaela Küfner. While he remains upbeat that the global south will remain interested in the United Nations and international law, despite American, Chinese and Russian exceptionalism, DW Bureau Chief Ines Pohl is more pessimistic. She believes that the Rule of force could be here to stay. And the Europeans better learn fast, that military and economic might will reshape the global order – like it or not.
