
The Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has announced what she claims is the "most sweeping asylum reforms in modern times".
Under the new rules, refugees will face a much longer wait for permanent settlement in the UK, with much tougher rules and less generous help along the way.
Shabana Mahmood said this was vital to restore confidence in the asylum system that she said was in crisis.
Some Labour backbenches said the changes were desperate and wrong. The Conservatives and Reform said they did not go far enough.
