Government rape advisor quits saying she no longer has faith in the criminal justice system

In 2015, Emily Hunt woke up naked in a hotel room with a man she didn’t know, and no memory of how she got there. She later found out that a stranger had video-d her while she was unconscious – yet she faced a 5 year battle to see him convicted of voyeurism.

The Crown Prosecution Service never brought rape charges, saying there wasn’t enough evidence. Earlier this year the man walked away from court again – with a suspended sentence – after flouting a restraining order.

Emily Hunt’s experience in the justice system spurred her on to become an independent adviser to the government on rape in 2020 – but she’s decided not to continue with the role, saying victims of crime are still being failed.
