The government aims to pass emergency legislation on Saturday to protect the future of the British Steel plant in Scunthorpe, Sir Keir Starmer has said.
Parliament will be recalled for a rare sitting to debate a law aimed at securing the future of the UK’s last virgin steel plant in North Lincolnshire.
The government has been urged to nationalise the business as union bosses have said the future of the Scunthorpe steelworks is "on a knife-edge".
Jingye, the Chinese owner of British Steel, plans to close the blast furnaces and switch to a greener form of production.
Speaking in Downing Street on Friday, the prime minister said the country’s economic and national security are “on the line” and he planned to "take control" of the steel plant.
