It may be too early to say for sure, but it looks as though an escalating war between the US and Iran might have been avoided.
After the American attacks on Iranian nuclear sites, some kind of retaliation was expected and indeed promised. Tonight, the Iranians delivered on that pledge by firing missiles at a big American base in Qatar, where some British personnel are also often stationed.
But tonight the US President himself actually thanked Iran for giving "early notice" of the attack. What, you might ask, IS going on?
