Cabinet ministers loyal to Keir Starmer are understood to be working the members’ tea rooms in Parliament after the prime minister addressed challenges to his leadership to MPs in the Commons.
Allies of the PM are reported to be urging colleagues not to "plunge the party into chaos" – warning that a leadership contest would paralyse the government for months.
It comes after Starmer addressed the Commons on Wednesday after the King delivered the State Opening of Parliament to set out the government’s legislative agenda.
However, it remains uncertain whether Starmer will be in post to see the agenda through, with his allies reported to be bracing themselves for a leadership challenge by Health Secretary Wes Streeting on Thursday.
