Held down for eight minutes by police: footage shows lead-up to Shayne Sutherland death

In October 2020, Shayne Sutherland called 911 from a convenience store in Stockton, California and asked for a taxi, before claiming someone was trying to rob him. Body cam footage from that day shows the two police officers arriving and questioning Sutherland outside. After a few minutes, Sutherland was held in a prone restraint for more than eight minuets which resulted in his death. Officers could be heard repeatedly shouting ‘relax’ while Sutherland was short of breath and audibly in distress. He died 27 minutes later at a nearby hospital. The Guardian, in partnership with the California Newsroom, have looked at cases where people have died while being held in the prone restraint, and how after decades of warning, officers are continuing to do so.
