Helmet in memory of Ukrainians banned at Winter Olympics

A Ukrainian Olympic skeleton racer has been banned from wearing a helmet that has pictures of people killed in the war with Russia.

But Vladyslav Heraskevych said he will continue to use it.

The International Olympic Committee said the helmet broke a rule banning any “kind of demonstration or political, religious or racial propaganda.”

The Ukrainian Olympic Committee has appealed the decision saying it doesn’t break any rules and it’s in remembrance of those who have lost their lives.

The IOC said Heraskevych can wear a black armband instead.

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, athletes from Russia and Belarus were largely banned from international sport.

This is gradually changing and individual athletes have been allowed to compete in Milan Cortina.
