The eviction of 87-year-old Maricarmen Abascal, who was forcibly removed from her Madrid home of 70 years, sparked huge protests.
Tens of thousands of people took to the streets in Madrid and camps were set up in cities across Spain. She will return home after being discharged from the hospital after an agreement with the building’s owner. Her case prompted the government to announce new measures including extended eviction protection for vulnerable households until 2030 and restrictions on purchases by so-called vulture funds.
They still need parliament’s approval, and protesters say more demonstrations are planned this weekend.
