How drug gangs operate in Europe’s most dangerous city

Marseille has long held its unhappy reputation as one of Europe’s crime capitals.

But a record 49 drug-related murders last year, fuelled by a brutal turf-war between rival gangs, has taken the violence to a new level.

While French authorities struggle to get a grip – many of those caught up in it say acute social deprivation is to blame.

We were granted rare access to a gang in the city’s notorious northern quarters.
