How Haiti are daring to dream at the World Cup - despite being banned from the US

For the football-mad boys of Port-au-Prince, the next month promises to be one of unparalleled excitement.

The Haitian national side has made it through to the finals of the Fifa World Cup for the first time since 1974, carrying the hopes of a nation, which for decades has had so little reason for optimism.

Those who play barefoot in the city’s rough open spaces are craving a distraction from the grinding gang violence of their home, yet they have no chance of ever seeing a match.

Not only are the costs prohibitive for the poorest country to qualify, but Haiti is also one of the few competing countries facing a travel ban for the tournament, along with Iran, Senegal, and the Ivory Coast.
