India has established itself as one of the single most important customers for one of the most important products made in Russia: crude oil.
While the West tried to halt Russia’s war machine by stopping European countries buying Russian oil, Moscow simply shipped it to India, which then repurposed it and sold it back to Europe in the form of different products.
The result was no major net change in the funds Vladimir Putin received to fund his war against Ukraine.
Earlier this month, Donald Trump imposed a 25% penalty on India in addition to 25% tariffs for buying oil – and now he’s threatening secondary tariffs and sanctions to stop the shipments happening.
