With the start of January, Poland has assumed the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union. This follows a turbulent term with Hungary at the helm, which saw Prime Minister Viktor Orban frequently in conflict with other EU partners. Polish prime minister Donald Tusk is expected to oversee a return to consensus-building. Warsaw says it will prioritize security and defence policies during its six month stint.
