
It is an air disaster which unfolded on the runway of Manchester Airport and brought about industry-wide changes to aircraft safety.
A total of 55 people died and many more were injured when, in 1985, British Airtours flight 28M bound for Corfu caught fire on take off, on 22 August.
The Manchester Air Disaster is often referred to as a "defining moment in the history of civil aviation safety" – bringing in the worldwide changes to flying which are familiar today.
But, despite the sweeping changes, the disaster is not widely know – so just what happened, and what measures were brought in as a result?
