Cutting the drink-drive limit and banning over 70s from driving, if they fail eyesight tests, are among government plans to make roads safer in England and Wales.
Ministers hope the road safety strategy – which is the first of its kind in more than a decade – will reduce deaths and serious injuries on Britain’s roads by 65% by 2035 and by 70% for children under 16.
The road safety strategy also proposes ordering some convicted drink-drivers to have alcolocks fitted to their vehicles, as well as new powers to suspend driving licences for people suspected of drink or drug-related driving offences.
