Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has said ‘good progress’ has been made on tariff talks and visa-free travel to China in his meeting with its leader, Xi Jinping.
He said he and the Chinese leader had a ‘very good, constructive meeting,’ and discussed how ‘huge opportunities’ in China could benefit people in the UK.
During their talks, Starmer told the president he wanted a ‘more sophisticated relationship’ with China, while Xi said the two men would ‘stand the test of history’ if they could ‘rise above differences’. Starmer is the first British prime minister to visit since Theresa May in 2018.
The prime minister met the Chinese President, accompanied by "top aides and top ministers", at the Great Hall of the People on the first morning of his trip to China.
The meeting, which lasted about an hour and 20 minutes, was the second between the two men and represents the culmination of months of preparation for Starmer’s visit as he seeks to reset relations between the two countries.
