
After slowly creeping towards Jamaica for several days, Melissa struck the island on Tuesday as a Category 5 Hurricane – the strongest to hit the island since records began in 1851.

Category 5 means sustained wind speeds of at least 157 mph – Melissa’s were well above this threshold measured at 185 mph.
It weakened as it passed over the island, but the infrastructure damage and flooding is thought to be widespread with the government describing Jamaica as a ‘disaster area’.
