Husband of attacked Australian MP Helen Haines gives update

The husband of Australian MP Helen Haines has confirmed that both her legs have been amputated after she was hit by a car in an alleged targeted attack.

Haines, a 65-year-old independent lawmaker for the Victorian seat of Indi, was hit by a Toyota Land Cruiser SUV while she was getting things out of the boot of her car in Wangaratta, Victoria, around 3.30pm on Monday.

Brendan Nugent, from nearby Tarrawingee, has been charged with intentionally causing serious injury, dangerous driving causing serious injury and causing harm to a federal official.

During a press conference, Haines’ husband Phil told reporters that his wife is "alive and stable" despite her significant injuries.

Haines’ left leg was amputated on Monday and surgeons battled to save her right leg, but it also had to be amputated on Wednesday, he said.
