Arrested by ICE and deported to West Africa – this is how Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown is sending people to countries they’ve never heard of.

According to information collected by human rights groups, the Trump administration has agreements with at least 35 third countries – some of the world’s poorest – to take in deportees from the United States who can’t be returned to their original countries.
About 25,000 people have been scooped up and sent to a variety of third countries – including Liberia – where Channel 4 News found deportees from Latin America with no idea what to do now, unable to speak the language and separated from family in the US.
The Trump administration is proud of its aggressive immigration policy and intends it to be a deterrent. August saw a new high in arrests by ICE, reaching nearly 51,000. It is now increasingly deporting people to third countries, describing it as a “show of force”, intended to make people fear the consequences of entering the US without permission.
For those affected it is a sentence that leaves them in limbo, thousands of miles from their families and the lives they had built in the United States.
