Sally Challen was convicted of murdering her husband of 31 years and was sent to prison for life in 2011.

But eight years later, her conviction was quashed after the court accepted that the decades of coercive control that her husband had over her was a valid defence to her actions.
David Challen, son of Sally Challen, grew up witnessing the abuse his mother suffered at home and campaigned for two years to free her.
He hopes to continue to raise awareness of coercive control – which was recognised by law as a form of domestic abuse in 2015 – with his new book ‘The Unthinkable.’
